Using Toyota Safety Sense Pre-Collision System

Most new Toyota models are equipped with a suite of active driver assist features called Toyota Safety Sense. These use sensors and advanced computers to semi-autonomously help drivers:

  • Avoid frontal collisions
  • Stay in their lane
  • Improve visibility at night

One of the most important features of Toyota Safety Sense is the Pre-Collision System. This system detects vehicles in front of your car, and gives a warning if it calculates that a collision is likely. If the driver brakes, the vehicle may assist with increased braking force to shorten the stopping distance in emergencies. If the driver does not brake, the vehicle can act on its own to apply the brakes, automatically preventing or reducing the impact.

Depending on your vehicle, your pre-collision system may or may not include pedestrian detection. Pedestrian detection is standard in most midsize or larger vehicles, and also in several compact models like the 2018 C-HR, and the 2017 Prius.
