What is Antifreeze and How Does it Work?

Man Filling Antifreeze Fluid in His Car

Like motor oil and transmission fluid, antifreeze is a key automotive fluid. So what is antifreeze used for in your vehicle? Antifreeze is added to your car’s cooling system to help regulate engine temperature. In the guide below from the Don Ringler Toyota service center, we’ll dive into the details of how antifreeze works, when it’s time to schedule service in Belton, and more.

What is Antifreeze?

What is antifreeze, and how is it different from coolant? These two automotive fluids are similar, but composed differently. Made from Ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, antifreeze is a concentrated solution that must be diluted with water — at which point it’s referred to as coolant! Coolant is a 50:50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Antifreeze usually has a green color, although it can also appear pink or orange thnks to dyes and additives chosen to match the vehicle type.

So how does antifreeze work in your vehicle’s cooling system? Antifreeze is added to the radiator, from where the coolant fluid is pumped directly to important engine components. As it circulates through the cooling system, the antifreeze removes combustion-generated heat — keeping down the temperature car’s heater core. Finally, the fluid returns to the radiator.

Why is Antifreeze Important for Your Toyota Vehicle?

Antifreeze is formulated to resist overheating. Without antifreeze, lots of internal compliments would be at risk of overheating and damage. These parts may include:

  • Head Gasket
  • Engine Cylinders
  • Water Pump
  • Connector Rods

What should you do if your car hood is hot to the touch or you notice billowing steam? The problem may involve replacing your coolant or fixing a coolant leak. To learn more, contact our service center to speak with an expert.
