Toyotas showing how pre-collision system works

No matter where you’re headed in and around Belton, having robust safety features offers peace of mind. The Toyota Safety Sense™ advanced system works hard to keep you safer on every drive.

Toyota Safety Sense™ includes the incredible Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)*. But how does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work? Learn more below about how the Toyota Safety Sense™ suite can keep your family safe out on the road.

How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

How does the Toyota Pre-Collision System help you avoid accidents? As part of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), this system is designed to help prevent or reduce the severity of certain frontal collisions by using advanced sensors to monitor the road ahead. Below are the key functions of the Toyota Pre-Collision System:

    • Pre-Collision Warning: When the system detects a high likelihood of a collision, it warns you by sounding a buzzer and displaying both an icon and a warning message on your multi-information display, prompting you to take evasive action. If you have the accelerator strongly depressed, the system will also warn you of this.
  • Pre-Collision Brake Assist: If the system determines that the detected object is another vehicle, it will automatically perform a moderate brake. If the system determines that the driver’s brake operation is insufficient, it will automatically increase braking power.
  • Pre-Collision Brake Control: This feature activates if the system determines that there is an extremely high chance of a collision. The brakes are automatically applied to either assist in avoiding the collision or to mitigate the impact of the collision.
  • Emergency Steering Assist: If there is a high possibility of a collision, sufficient space is available in the lane to perform evasive maneuvers, and if the driver is operating the steering wheel, emergency steering assist helps maintain vehicle stability and prevent lane departure.
  • Intersection Collision Avoidance Support (Left/Right turn): When turning left/right at an intersection and the system detects another vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist, it activates pre-collision warning and pre-collision braking if it determines that there’s a high chance of a collision.
  • Acceleration Suppression at Low Speed: The system detects the possibility of a collision when driving at low speed with the accelerator depressed. Upon detection, the system can restrain engine output or apply brakes to weaken acceleration.

If your Toyota is equipped with the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, it continuously scans your surroundings as you drive around Killeen. The system is designed to detect pedestrians in your path, assess the likelihood of a collision, and help reduce impact speed if necessary. Keep in mind that effectiveness can vary based on factors like vehicle speed, pedestrian size and position, as well as weather, lighting, and road conditions.
